P311: Rare stamped large early 19th Century English Chess set made by Calvert of London.
Rosewood and boxwood (great deep patina throughout) kings 10.5cms, knights are very finely turned and carved from one piece.
Both rooks stamped on the bases Calvert.
Fine larger original box also stamped Calvert and the lid bears an inscription 'Chefs Men' (early spelling of Chessmen) . One of our new favorites.
Calvert was a premiere maker of the period in London for the noble class.
