P148: Rare Early 18th Century English Playing Chess Set

An early form English chess set with attractive cylindrical stems, inverted balusters and patination.
Note triangular form sections on bishops an knights. Larger set, 10cms kings - with no significant finiale for height.
Knight heads more turned over, Washington in form, wider than most.
Reference Gareth Williams (P.47) and Fersht (P.61) show related sets.

Made from boxwood, one side stained. Wonderful patina throughout.
