B55: Early Antique Continental Games Box

This games-box was probably made in German and dates from the 16th/17th Century.

The board surrounds are paneled in figured cross cut walnut.
The elaborate hinges and lock (secret opening latch) are made of iron and held in place with hand made iron nails. The incorporation of the four dice into the lock is a nice and unusual thematic touch.
The internal backgammon boards has central inlaid cartouche panels and elegantly designed marquetry backgammon obelisks.

The chess set shown with it is an early French Encyclopédie set.
The board measures ~40x40x6.5cms closed. The chess squares are 3.6cms across.
